Before removing the old fan switch, be sure to disconnect the power. Keep track of the position of all wires that are disconnected during the switch removal process. Avoid cutting the wires from the old switch, but instead use a small screwdriver to gently pry the wires out. Then, insert the tinned wires into the new switch in the same order that they were removed. Cutting the wire will result in the loss of the stiff tinned end, making it difficult to insert into the new switch without stripping and re-tinning it.
